CHRONIC PAIN therapy

Feeling some form of pain is unavoidable. When you get a paper-cut or strain a muscle, pain is your body's way of telling you something is wrong. The hurt goes away soon after the injury heals. However, If your body keeps hurting months after the injury, you are experiencing chronic pain. It can begin without any obvious cause. But for most people, it starts after an injury or could even be a by- product of a health condition.

Some of the main causes of chronic pain are:

  • Past injuries, strains/sprains, repetitive strain, or surgeries

  • Back/neck problems

  • Migraines and other headaches

  • Arthritis

  • Nerve damage

  • Infections

  • Fibromyalgia, a condition in which people feel muscle pain throughout their bodies without a core explainable cause.

Chronic pain can range from mild to severe. It can continue daily or occurs sporadically. Predominant symptoms are:

  • A dull ache

  • Throbbing

  • Burning

  • Shooting

  • Squeezing

  • Stinging

  • Soreness

  • Stiffness

Chronic pain can negatively impact your mind, body, and spirit (MBS).
It can interfere with your daily life, hampering you from doing things that are important to you. It can take a toll on your self-esteem and make you feel angry, depressed, anxious, and frustrated. There is a direct correlation between your emotions and pain. When you hurt, you're more likely to feel depressed. This can make your pain even worse, creating a vicious cycle.

The link between depression and pain is why antidepressants are often prescribed by physicians as part of chronic pain treatment. These drugs can help with both the pain and the emotional strain it causes. In addition, pain also interferes with sleep and raises your stress levels. Both a lack of sleep and more stress can exacerbate your symptoms further. If you hurt and it doesn’t seem to get better, see your primary care doctor or a pain specialist.
